At Highwinds, we believe strongly that to offer the best products and support, you need to hire “A” players at every position. The following “Get to Know Your NOC” is the first in a series highlighting our employees, their contributions and their interests outside of work.
We’re here to take your calls 24x7x365. As such, we hope to get to know you on a first name basis. Likewise, we want you to build a relationship with your account executive, solutions engineer and the Highwinds Network Operations Center support team. So, say hello to Lamar who works as a Jr. Systems Engineer in the NOC.
Hi Lamar, thanks for taking the time to chat with us. Can you tell us about your personal and professional background?
Lamar: I was born in Brooklyn, NY but moved to Florida at a very young age and have lived here ever since. I graduated from Valencia College in Orlando and have been working in the IT field ever since. Most of my prior work experience came from web hosting with cPanel LAMP servers.
When did you start working at Highwinds and what attracted you to the company?
Lamar: I started in November of 2012. The first thing that caught my eye when I interviewed was the office. After working in a gray cubical for years, it was nice to see an office space with a little style and flash [Laughs]. I’ve learned to love Highwinds for more than its fancy looks though, but that was the first thing that caught my eye.
Please share a specific challenge that you have handled in your role at Highwinds.
Lamar: One of the most memorable challenges I remember is working with one of our Fortune 100 enterprise customers to provide live streaming for a huge professional tennis tournament with a global audience. For most of the tournament this past year, I was on shift to monitor the events that took place early in the morning. With such an important event being shown live around the world, you always have to keep your eyes open and be ready for anything. During that time, I just remember my desk looking like a battle station. One screen monitoring logs in real time, one monitoring various camera streams, another with all my notes on the account and event. Also, can’t forget the iPad to monitor the stream through the event’s live streaming App, and the conference bridge we set up so the customer could dial in and speak to us directly if they had any questions or concerns. Definitely was on my toes every day, but the event went smoothly, and I got to see some great matches! [Laughs]
Tell us about some hobbies that you enjoy. Also, how about letting us in on something that most people don’t know about you?
Lamar: Oh, there’s a lot. I’m all over the place when I’m not at work. Right now, I’m gearing up for soccer season, which is one of my main loves in life. We have our local team, Orlando City Soccer, who is joining the MLS next year. The preseason games are actually starting this week so I’m going to be in full fan mode throughout the year. When I’m not watching/playing soccer, I’m playing video games, mostly FIFA 14 (yes, a soccer game … I’m predictable). I also enjoy DJ’ing as a hobby, hanging out with friends, drinking craft beers and I can never turn down a good party.
What are some trends you’re seeing with the companies you work with? Can you share some insights?
Lamar: I’ve seen a big push in gaming over the past year here at Highwinds, which is great, because I too, am a gamer. It’s exciting to work with big gaming companies like Valve, GameFly and Humble Bundle and big game titles like Hawken and World of Tanks. It’s awesome to see the success they’re having and I can’t wait to see what our next partnerships will bring us.
What do you like best about working at Highwinds?
Lamar: I really love the environment here. I’m hard pressed to say that I’ve ever worked with a better group of individuals. From my team here in the NOC, to our development team, system and network engineers, Highwinds is full of employees with intelligent, untapped potential, and the will to work and grow together. I’ve learned a lot in my time here, and I strive to continue to grow and see what the next opportunity brings me here at Highwinds.
Thank you to Lamar for taking the time to give us a closer look at both his personal and professional life. Highwinds customers can count on Lamar and the rest of our talented support staff to troubleshoot issues and provide helpful tips to improve your content workflow. We never outsource support, and a highly-trained, professional support rep with full account access will answer your initial call every time.
