Highwinds is a clear technology leader in multi-platform IP services and content distribution. Our high-performance RollingThunder network was purpose-built in 2007 for a modern, high-change, media object hosting environment. RollingThunder currently comprises:
  • 21 Points of Presence (POPs) spanning two continents, including 21 network nodes and 7 content delivery nodes.
  • An international backbone consisting of multiple redundant 10 Gbps links and nearly a Terabit per second of network capacity.
  • A large private peering infrastructure, with 80-90 percent of traffic delivered directly to users through peering relationships.

A Powerful, Reliable Way to Move Content

The Highwinds CDN enables users to distribute and manage many forms of content over our vast worldwide private network of interconnected servers and high-speed fiber-optic network connections.

We provide companies with powerful, continuous support for both static and rich-media content, including high-bandwidth multimedia content that has historically been difficult to deliver reliably over the public Internet. The network serves content in all leading industry formats - Windows Media Server, Adobe Flash Streaming Server, and HTTP downloads.

The primary components of our CDN include:

  • RollingThunder. A high-performance network that consists of state-of-the-art routers and 10 Gbps fiber connections between all data centers.
  • RollingThunder DFS. Reliable and trusted file management software that provides rapid provisioning to the edge - instantly replicating files at different CDN nodes.
  • RollingThunder Doppler Server. Intuitive content routing optimization software that automatically delivers content through the fastest, most efficient route.
  • StrikeTracker. A browser-based dashboard that interacts with the network to provide real-time analytics, rapid provisioning and self-service content management functions.
  • Peering Relationships. Approximately 80-90 percent of our traffic is delivered directly to users through hundreds of peering relationships with major ISPs and cable MSOs.

Proven Distributed Messaging Bus Technology

Highwinds' content delivery network incorporates our proven and highly scalable distributed messaging bus technology. The Highwinds messaging bus is both high-volume and high-speed. It sustains traffic loads of well over 1 Gbps and reliably propagates messages around the world in a matter of seconds. Fault-tolerant, better-than-linear scaling permits the entire network to rapidly resynchronize after a network outage, with no intervening loss of service.

Our advanced technologies underlie critically important advantages of the RollingThunder network over the competition in the areas of peering, real-time analytics, instant account provisioning, rapid content deployment, complete content control and massive scalability.

Large Private Peering Infrastructure

Most CDNs only have one or two transit connections that require many hops to reach the end user, but the Highwinds CDN peers with over 700 networks and 11,000 ASNs worldwide. Many businesses are finding value in establishing peering relationships. Cost-competitive corporate peering agreements enable Highwinds to put content directly on the customer's network, providing unparalleled content distribution power through a local infrastructure that improves network efficiencies and drives down costs.
